Gluten-Free all the way!

At The Homemade Brownie Company, ensuring our delicious brownies are accessible to all is important to us, which is why all of our brownies are made with 100% gluten-free ingredients as standard. And the best part? They taste amazing!

The Homemade Brownie Company owner and head baker, Laura became gluten intolerant after having her second child and from then on, everything she baked was gluten-free. She said: “People are often surprised to discover that my brownies are gluten-free. Often, gluten-free baked goods aren’t as nice or have a different texture, but I’m often told you can’t tell that mine are gluten-free, which is a huge compliment!”

A gluten-free diet is advised for those who have coeliac disease or gluten sensitivity. For coeliacs, gluten causes an adverse reaction that damages intestinal cells, which can lead to serious health problems, so a strict, life-long gluten-free diet is essential. For those with gluten sensitivity, although they do not sustain damage by consuming gluten, they may still experience the same symptoms that coeliacs do.

What is a gluten-free diet?

Gluten is a mixture of proteins found in wheat, rye and barley that cause a detrimental reaction in people with gluten-related disorders. A gluten-free diet is one that does not contain these grains or any foods or ingredients derived from them. The obvious items include breads, pasta and baked goods made with flour containing gluten, but other foods such as sauces, salad dressings, soups and other processed foods may also contain gluten if small amounts of gluten grains have been used to make them. To achieve a gluten-free diet you must swap these items for gluten-free substitutes or replace with other gluten-free food groups entirely, such as fruit, vegetables and rice.

Gluten-free facts and stats

  • It is thought that approximately 1 in 100 people worldwide have coeliac disease.
  • The majority of people with gluten-related disorders remain undiagnosed.
  • There are around 200 potential symptoms that could be experienced.
  • Even tiny amounts of gluten - such as crumbs - can cause damage to a person with coeliac disease, or be problematic for those with gluten sensitivity, even if they do not show symptoms immediately.
  • The assumption that a gluten-free diet is ‘healthier’ for non-sufferers is not always true. If people replace gluten products with gluten-free equivalents, it’s the same, it’s only when foods such as bread and baked goods are replaced with items such as fruit and vegetables that it becomes a healthier diet.
  • Wheat-free is different to gluten-free. A “wheat-free” food could still contain rye or barley, meaning the product is not gluten-free.

Our brownies

Laura experimented with many different gluten-free recipes to find the perfect one and it was worth the wait! We offer 14 flavours of brownie, all of which are gooey and delicious. We prepare and bake all of our brownies with gluten-free ingredients, in gluten-free conditions. Our vegan range, which is also dairy-free, is produced separately to ensure complete peace of mind for our customers.

Nuts in our recipes

Four of our brownies contain nuts (Snickers, Peanut Butter, Nutella Blondie and Fruit & Nut) and these are always prepared separately to the other flavours. If you have nut allergies, you simply need to opt for one of our other ten flavours - Classic, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Orange, Classic Blondie, M&M, Double Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Blondie Brownie, Mint Chocolate or Lemon Blondie - which are all nut-free (although produced in the same kitchen as our flavours that do contain nuts, so there may be nut traces). Please note that our vegan range contains nuts due to the use of almond milk.

Vegan range

Our vegan range is completely free from animal products such as dairy items and eggs. We substitute the butter and eggs from our standard recipe for almond milk and vegetable oil to maintain the right texture and consistency and an equally delicious taste. Our vegan range consists of four different flavours - Classic, Salted Caramel, Peanut Butter and Fruit & Nut.

The vegan lifestyle is on the rise. According to research conducted by the Vegan Society in 2018, there are around 600,000 vegans in Great Britain. Some choose to go vegan as they believe animal farming to be inhumane, whilst others are concerned about the effects of animal agriculture on the environment. Some simply view veganism as a healthier diet as it’s low in fat, calories and cholesterol and high in fiber and vitamins.

Dairy-free

Our vegan range is also dairy-free, making it ideal for those with dairy intolerances or those preferring to avoid dairy products for other reasons.
